Tips to Lower Your Moving Cost if You Live in An Apartment or High-Rise

Many people want to know how best to minimize the cost of their next moves. However, be aware that if you live in Boston high-rise condo or apartment, the cost of that move is potentially higher. This is not because movers charge any kind of special fee or surcharge for these residences. It simply takes more hours to complete the work. Also Luxury high rise condos charge a service fee for the loading dock area and the use of the elevator.

Time Is Money When it Comes to Moving

So why does it usually cost more to move if you live in an Boston luxury apartment of high-rise? It is fairly standard practice for movers to charge per crew member per hour. Therefore, the longer a move takes, the more the total move is going to cost, and there are some time-consuming elements that are specific to apartments, high-rises, and condos. This includes stairs, elevators, and occupied or restricted loading bays.

In general elevators are the slowest element of a move, so be sure to budget for that if your move will require elevator use.

Moving Day Tips

Generally Boston luxury apartments and high-rises are more expensive to move, but there are some ways to ensure the move goes as quickly, smoothly, and cheaply as possible.

  • Avoid Weekends
Especially in apartments or high-rises, the parking lots and loading bays can become very crowded on the weekends. This results in movers having to park far away or waiting around for extended periods of time for a slot to open. This will significantly slow your move down and end up costing you a lot of unnecessary money. If possible move midweek for a far less crowded and quicker move.
  • Avoid Moving in Inclement Weather
In addition to avoiding weekends, try to also avoid extreme weather. Rain or snow could make some walkways slick, and this will contribute to slowing your movers down. It will also increase the risk of items being dropped, dinged, or damaged. That being said, many apartment managers do shovel snow away from the walkways and put down salt or something for traction, so there is not necessarily a whole season to avoid moving.
